Homemade Products To Help Save Money

Oh man, it’s been a crazy week!

I was gone the entire weekend, plus a few days, seeing my dad in Texas and I am having a hard time getting back to the “normal routine.” Let me just say, after logging in all those hours of drive time, cooped up in the Equinox, but not without good company, I was ready to get back home. As 8:30 rolled around Sunday evening and the comfort of my residence was just under feet, I gladly jumped out and headed inside. I must say, I was pleasantly surprised that my husband had left our home in the same neat order I left it. Windows were still open, allowing in the fresh breeze, and no dirty dishes were lying on the countertop next to the sink. However, they weren’t in the drain rack either! This raised a little suspicion, but I knew full well what he did. He decided to make things easier on himself and had dinner with his mom most nights. I was good with that decision. Needless to say, even without the enticement of unclean plates and cups, I still could see tiny little critters known as ants happily marching about my kitchen countertops. Even though I am intrigued by these little pests, and their uniform conformity, I don’t like seeing them enter from within the inside of my window frame.

This is what sparked my interest in researching the recipe for Homemade Products To Help Save Money.

Here are a few tips in order to prevent or help prevent an ant infestation:

Keep your house clean, especially the kitchen, and sweep floors after meals, always cover foods left out on counter, never leave dirty dishes in the sink. Ants are attracted by food. Keep trash cans far away from the house as possible and remember to take trash out daily. Don’t allow moisture to accumulate on counters and other surfaces, ants are drawn towards water and will stay near the source.

Here are some natural ant repellents that are not only safe, but cheap and found in most homes. They are so simple, it’s just crazy!

One can place instant grits along an ant path in order to stop the invasion. When ants begin to eat grits they start dying as grits work as dehydrators, absorbing all the water from ants’ bodies.

The safest homemade remedy for eliminating the colony is a mixture of water and white vinegar. Spray the substance along the paths of the ants that are coming to your place.

Flour and chalk also work in similar ways. By drawing a line around a home’s entry points with chalk keeps ants at bay. The ants will be repelled by the calcium carbonate in the chalk, as it is made up of ground up and compressed shells of marine animals. Flour should be used indoors by sprinkling a line along the backs of pantry shelves and wherever you see ants entering the house. For some reason, ants won’t cross over the line.

I will have to give these tips a try and hope this helps someone else as well. If so, let me know, I would love to hear from you. Just send an email to mindy@douglascountyherald.com.
