Douglas Co. Democrats Meet at Local Restaurant

The Douglas County Democrats met on May 5 at Guacamole’s in Ava.  The meeting was called to order by Chair Teresa Tost at 5:45 p.m.
The minutes from last month’s meeting were shared with the group. Motion was made and seconded to  accept the minutes.  Motion passed unanimously.
The treasurer reported our current balance. Members were given the opportunity to donate to the  funds which will eventually be given to the Back Pack program in each of the three public schools in Douglas County.
Old Business: Chair Teresa Tost thanked all the members who donated their time to clean up our section of Highway 76 just west of Highway 5. Members shared stories of their favorite “finds” during the clean up.
New Business: Chair reported that the Talent Show to benefit the Ava Summer Fest was a great success and another show is scheduled for September. This show will be open to all ages and will include more types of acts.  The Summer Fest will be held on May 21 with live music on the Ava square, then on May 23 it will continue with activities in the Ava City Park including many participating vendors.
The Chair also reported that tomorrow, May 6, there will be a meeting at 10 at the Ava Community Center.  The subject is Safety and the program is hosted by MU Extension program. Speakers will include Ava Chief of Police, Douglas County Sheriff, and Judge Elizabeth Bock.
The Chair also told the group that Missouri Secretary of State, Jason Kander, is a candidate for the U.S. Senate. He will be in Springfield on May 14 to speak.  The program will be from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at Barley, Wheat, and Rye on Republic Road. No Democratic candidates have announced that they will be running for Missouri governor, but two candidates, Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders, have announced that they will be running for the office of President in 2016.
The next Chamber of Commerce luncheon is planned for May 12 on the Ava square. If it rains the luncheon will be moved to the Lions Club Building.  As members of the Chamber, the Chair encouraged all members of our group to attend.
Our next meeting will be on Tuesday,  June 2, at Guacamole’s Restaurant.  Dinner will be at 5 p.m. and the meeting will begin at 5:30 p.m.
Motion was made and seconded to adjourn. Motion passed unanimously and meeting was adjourned at 6:11 p.m.
