Skyline R-II School Foundation Impromptu Board Meeting

The Skyline School R2 School Foundation had a sudden, impromptu, formal meeting on Wednesday morning at the Skyline School.  The Foundation is pleased to report that there are 23 students active in the Dolly Parton Imagination Library program currently and already there are 14 graduates.  ‘Graduates’ refers to the five year olds who have been receiving a new book up until the start of school this year.  Their last free book was one called “Look Out Kindergarten, Here I Come!”  Now they are busy beginning their academic life and getting socialized with their classmates who will be learning with them for the next twelve or thirteen years.  Chances are there will be some lifelong friendships made in this new exciting situation. Any child in the school district can participate in the DPIL regardless of income.  From birth to age five years a new book, appropriate to the child’s age, will arrive in the mail each month addressed to the child.  The love of reading is key to a successful education and Dolly Parton’s program has proven successful in her home county in Tennessee and in rural Douglas County as well.  Find applications at Skyline R2 School and at Henson’s Grocery and Gas in Downtown Champion.  The Foundation board members also discussed the current project of providing new, safe drinking fountains for the students.  An estimated $3,000.00 is needed to replace three interior water fountains and one on the playground.    The cost of the up-to-date units is only about two thirds of the total.  Instillation will most likely be another third.  It could be that there is a plumber or a contractor who is an alumnus of the school who will be able to install the water fountains in compliance with required codes and perhaps at a reduced rate or ‘pro bono’ in recognition of a good start in life.  Fund raising is always difficult and ideas are being bandied about.  Meanwhile the kids are ‘making do’ and there is a fruit jar on the counter at Henson’s store ready for donations.  Donations can also be made in person at the school or by mail to the Skyline R2 School Foundation, Rt. 72 Box 486, Norwood, MO 65717.  The Foundation is expecting to have a booth at the Skyline Fall Festival that will be held at the School on October 17th from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m.  Look for more news about this PTO event soon.
