Sunday, August 3 was the Seventh Sunday after Trinity. Bishop Hartley based his sermon on the Old Testament lesson for the day, Hosea 14: “Return, O Israel, to the Lord your God, for you have stumbled because of your iniquity.” In this passage the 8th-century B.C. prophet exhorts the people of Israel to repent, which means return, and recognize their (and our) failure to receive the blessings that God has promised. There are four steps in this process: 1. Accept responsibility, 2. Make an honest confession to God, 3. Make a prayer of commitment, and 4. Accept that God wants us to have new life through him & through Christ.
We were delighted to have with us Lincoln Connell visiting from his army career at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, and his girlfriend, Hannah, down from Warrenton, who is also in college in Illinois. I was also glad to be invited Sunday afternoon to the Connell house for a get-together to visit with Lincoln and Hannah and have more of Stephanie’s wonderful food. We spent a wonderful afternoon visiting and hearing about Lincoln’s summer training he had undergone at West Point; he returns there next week.
