Douglas County Fair Friday and Saturday

The Douglas County Fair will be held this Friday and Saturday, July 14 and 15, with lots of activities and fun crammed into the two days. The theme of this year’s fair is “Country Scenes and Chidren’s Dreams.” A number of special events are scheduled, with the concluding event being the ever-popular Saturday Night Smash-Up demolition derby. There will also be lawn mower races and a lawn mower demolition derby this year, as well as livestock and general exhibits. The carnival provided by Big D’s Amusements, Fisk, Mo., will be in place on the midway and ready to go when gates open at 5 o’clock Friday. The Little Britches and Fair Royalty competition will begin at 6:15 p.m. Friday. Boys and girls, ages 4 and under, participate in the Little Britches stick horse class. The Fair Royalty competition is open to young ladies and gentlemen, ages 5 to 18. Also scheduled on Friday night is a Power Wheels Derby, lawn mower races and a lawn mower demolition derby. Livestock shows will begin at 12 noon on Saturday. General exhibits will be entered between 6 and 8 p.m. tonight (Thursday) and will remain in place until 8:30 p.m. Saturday. Separate categories of judging will be open for juniors under 19 years of age. There will be kids’ games throughout the afternoon on Saturday, from noon until 5 p.m. Also on Saturday afternoon, entries will be accepted for the Grandma’s Cookie Jar contest with registration beginning at 3 p.m. in the General Exhibits Building. Entries for the contest may also be brought in between 6 and 8 p.m. Thursday. Rules for the Grandma’s Cookie Jar Contest are: • Must be a grandmother to enter. • Must consist of two varieties of cookies in a closed, see-through cookie jar or container. • Must be homemade by a grandmother. • Cookie jar must contain a minimum of one dozen cookies total. • Two cookies of each variety must be submitted on a covered paper plate or in clear plastic bag for judging. • Entrant must provide two additional cookies of each variety in a plastic bag that will be placed in a fair-provided cookie jar for a drawing to be held after the competition. • There are no residence restrictions. • Cookies and/or container may be decorated. Use your imagination! A 4-H robotics demonstration will be held at 3:30 p.m., then the big event of the evening, the ever-popular demolition derby, will be held at 7 p.m. in the main arena.
