The National Day of Prayer was observed Thursday, May 1. About 30 people gathered on the Ava square to pray at noon. Bob Thompson, Jr. pastor of the Mt. Zion Church of God (holiness) organized the 40 minute service. The group sang four patriotic songs, accompanied by Barbara Uhles on the accordian. Various ministers from the community prayed for our federal, state and local government, armed forces, law enforcement, schools, families and churches. Those participating included pastors Oren Alcorn, Mike Banks, Dwayne Moore, Danny Letsinger and the chaplain of our sheriff’s department. Ten members from our congregation attended: Pastor Bob and Sister Cinda Thompson, Linda Ferguson, Phyllis Arnold, Bill and Jeanette Cardin, Dennis and Barbara Uhles, Mary and Bob Thompson, Sr.
In two consecutive Wednesday evening services, a summary of the book of Ezkiel was given by our pastor. Sunday morning’s special music was a vocal duet by our pastor and his wife. In the evening service Barbara Uhles sang a vocal solo. Jesse Paxton led the congregational singing in both services.
Pastor Bob’s sermon Sunday morning was “The Deceptive Heart” from Luke 22. Jesus said, “Satan hath desired you, that he may sift you as wheat; but I have prayed for you, that your faith fail not.” Are we wheat or chaff? Difficulties are as necessary and beneficial for the soul as winnowing is for the wheat. Jesus’ prayer paved the way for Peter to repent.
Sister Cinda Thompson’s message Sunday night was “The Sifting of Our Faith.” Brother John Venzia is faithful in the Amen corner. Jim and Elaine Hanson were visitors Sunday night.
On Saturday, May 3, we helped Donald and Alona Fitzgerald and their two children move to their newly purchased home south of Ava. Sisters Cinda and Mary Thompson served lunch to the movers: James Cox, Earnest Murray, Dana and Alex Fourman, Sheena Mahan, Jeanette and Bill Cardin, Dennis Uhles, Pastor Bob Thompson and his father. The Fitzgeralds have attended Mt Zion Church since moving to the area in December.
