T.O.P.S. was called to order by Sharon at 3:45. There was a combined weight loss of 10 ¼ pounds with 17 weighing in, and Evelyn was the highest loser. The lesson was given by Sharon on “Risks of Food-borne Illnesses”.
Sharon’s discussion was based on ChooseMyPlate.gov. We reviewed good cooking habits such as clean, separate, cook and chill. Washing hands and sanitizing surfaces were things we were all aware of. Yet how long to wash hands (about as long as singing the alphabet song—twice) was a good reminder. Cleaning appliances, especially buttons, was to avoid cross-contamination. Keeping raw food separate from cooked foods is especially important. Foods should cook to an internal temperature of 140 + degrees and chilling to less than -40 degrees. We also learned to wash produce, including bananas, to rid them of fruit fly eggs. No sense in bringing flies into the house!
