Middle School Bears Host Liberty, Cabool In Basketball Play

The Ava Middle School Bears hosted the Liberty Eagles on Monday, Nov. 25 .

The Bears won an exciting 7th  grade contest 37-34.

Ava jumped out to an 11-0 lead to start the game but Liberty rallied to take a 17-13 halftime lead. The Bears played a strong third quarter to regain the lead 28-24. The game remained close throughout the final period of play and was not decided until Ava rebounded a 3-point attempt by Liberty just as time expired.

Drake King led the scoring for the Bears with 12 points, followed by Stephen Copeland with 11 points. Caleb Johnson and Griffin Taylor scored 5 points each, and Dustin Kilgore scored 4 points to complete the scoring for Ava.

The Eagles defeated the Bears 55-28 in the 8th grade game. Liberty led 12-6 after one quarter of play and extended the lead to 28-10 by halftime.

Eight players scored in the game for Ava, led by Quincey McDonald’s 6 points. The remainder of the scoring for the Bears included:   Joey Swofford 4, Michael Lane 4, Wyatt Gastineau 4, Takoma Dobbs 3, Bailey Bewley 3, Connor Moran 2, and Quinton Kelly 2.

The Bears hosted the Cabool Bulldogs on Tuesday, Nov. 26 . Ava jumped out to an early lead and never looked back as they defeated the Cabool 7th  grade squad 45-9.

Leading scorers for the Bears were Stephen Copeland and Caleb Johnson with 10 points each. Bryce Mings scored 8 points; Griffin Taylor and Dustin Kilgore scored 6 points each. Dwight Emerson scored 3 points and Drake King chipped in 2 points to round out the scoring for Ava.

The visiting Bulldogs defeated the Bears 29-27 in the 8th grade game. Ava trailed 11-4 after the first quarter of play but rallied to close the gap to 17-15 by halftime. The game was tied 23-23 after three quarters of play and tied at 27 late in the game. Unfortunately for the Bears, the Bulldogs were the last to score in the game.

Takoma Dobbs led Ava’s scoring with 10 points, followed by Quincey McDonald with 7 points. Joey Swofford and Weston Stillings scored 5 points each to complete the scoring for the Bears.

The Middle School Bears played at Hollister Monday, Dec. 2.

Hollister 7th grade defeated Ava 39-30, and the 8th grade contest went to Hollister, 49-43.
