What About This…? 11.28.2013

By Wayne William Cipriano

As the holiday season approaches, one of the recurring themes we hear is the plight of the poor in our country. Those of us living in this harbor of luxury feel the differences between “us” and “them”.

Let us consider for a moment that there are people in this world, many, many people, who get up before dawn and work until sunset every day of their lives. People who come home at twilight to a supper or beans and rice, or on special occasions, rice and beans, and are grateful to the powers that control their universe that all their children are still alive.

When we think about these things we understand the difference between being “poor” in the United States of America and being poor elsewhere.

Yes, there are vast differences among us Americans in this realm of opportunity and extravagance in which we are so lucky to find ourselves. But we are, all and each of us, so very far ahead of where we might be, aren’t we?

And, we have so very much to be thankful for, don’t we?
