Lady Bears Beat Mtn. Grove; Let Lebanon Game Slip Away

The Ava Lady Bears fell behind 4-0 in the top of the third inning in SCA softball here Monday afternoon but settled down and defeated Mtn. Grove 11-4.
The Ava girls scored seven runs in the bottom half of the third, including a 2-run homer by senior Maranda Yost. Ava would score two more in the fourth and another two in the fifth to seal the win.
Ava had 13 hits in the game, drew three walks and had one batter hit by a pitch. Mtn. Grove fielders also committed four errors to help the Lady Bears.
Walks and errors continue to hamper the Lady Bears as well, but Ava bats overcame the deficit on Monday.
Catcher Jacey Swofford drove in three Ava runs, going 3-for-4 at the plate with a double.
Lakota Blakey was 3-for-4 with two runs scored and Maison Bovard was 2-for-4 with a double and a run scored.
Ava’s SCA contest with Thayer was rained out here last Thursday afternoon.That game will be made up on Monday, Oct. 7, when the Lady Bears were scheduled to play at West Plains. The West Plains game has been scratched in order to schedule the conference game.
Ava traveled to Lebanon on Tuesday and came up just short of a big win.
“We had a 4-2 lead in the top of the sixth,” Coach Rex Sawyer said, “but made a couple of costly errors.”
The Yellowjackets won the game 5-4 with three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning.
Coach Sawyer commends his team for playing much better ball now.
Senior third baseman Kayte Aid was 4-for-4 on Tuesday and drove in two runs. Yost was 2-for-3 with a run scored, and Regennitter was 2-for-3.
The Lady Bears will host Houston in SCA play today and will travel to Willow Springs for a conference game on Monday. Mansfield will be here Tuesday in non-conference action.
Thursday, Oct. 3, will be Senior Night at the Ava softball field, with senior players and their parents to be recognized before the start of the game.
