Douglas/Ozark Counties RTA Met September 17, 2013

The Douglas and Ozark Counties Retired Teachers and Other School Personnel met for lunch at the Senior Citizens at the Ava Community Center. The guest speaker for this meeting was Mike Cunningham, Missouri State Senator of the 33rd District. Members in attendance were Marie Bristol, Julane Williams, Barbara Groover, Betty Moore, Kay Transano, Tanya Williams, Virginia Parsley, Eva Painter, Geraldine Gray, Colleen Lakey, Ruth Evans, and Norma Stillings

Senator Cunningham reported on the recent Veto Session in which the Missouri Assembly considered an override of some of the Bills that had been vetoed by Governor Nixon. HB 253, which had received a lot of attention during the last few weeks before that session did not pass. Senator Cunningham’s comment on that and some of the other bills that failed, was that legislators need to write better bills and work with the schools in the writing process when the outcome will impact school funding.

Senator Cunningham discussed several issues in response to questions on the relationship of tax credits on keeping and gaining jobs in Missouri, gasoline tax to roads and bridges, teacher tenure and the current laws, and “Common Core Curriculum in Missouri. In all these cases people need to be informed and participate in the discussion.

Marie Bristol co-president, reported on the MRTA delegate assembly. No by-laws changes had been proposed so the meeting was more relaxed than it might have been. Our Region 10 Vice President, Barbara Self, resigned to take a state office. She was elected to be the 2014 Vice President of the MRTA State Organization.

Bob Priddy, news director of the Missourinet, was one of the guest speakers at the General Session. He spoke on the effort to preserve and maintain the Missouri State Capitol Building. Marie had purchased one of his books that had pictures and a history of the Capitol.

Another speaker at the MRTA General Session was Steve Yoakum, Executive Director of PSRS/PEERS. Marie said that Retirees would receive a 2% cost of living increase in 2014.

During a short business meeting a motion to change the regular meeting date from the second Tuesday of the month to the third Tuesday of the month. This had been brought up at the August meeting. The motion carried with no opposition.

An update was given on the progress of plans for the October 18 Region 10 Meeting to be held at Ozark, Missouri. After the meeting, “goody bags” were filled with brochures and promotional items from Douglas and Ozark County businesses and organizations.

The next Douglas and Ozark Counties RTA meeting is scheduled for October 8 in Gainesville.
