Ava Girls Drop First SCA V’ball Match to Houston

The Lady Bears traveled to Houston Tuesday night to take on the Lady Tigers in their first conference volleyball game of the season.
The JV team started the night off strong with their first set win of 25-11, stumbled in the second set, losing 7-25, then rallied back and won the third set easily by a score of 25-9.
Strong serving from Shelby Bushong who had five aces and was 16-for-17 on serving helped the Lady Bears to their victory.  Cera Longino and Bree Gidney also added three aces each.
The varsity squad started off strong and won the first set 25-23 but ended up dropping the second two sets with scores of 21-25 and 14-25.
This will be the Lady Bears first loss in conference play.
“I was really impressed with the first set,” said Coach Sarah Roy, “but some silly mistakes and inconsistent serving lost us the game.”
The Lady Bears missed five serves at pivotal points in the game.
The team was led in aces by Caley Wallace who had two. Both Alena Stokes and Bailey Loge added one ace apiece.
The Lady Bears also had a strong line of defense in their blocking which forced the Lady Tigers to change up their offense and start tipping the ball.  Darian Bushong had 10 blocks, Erica Croney had eight and also had one stuff block, and Rachel Swofford had five blocks, as well.
The Lady Bears were led in kills by Erica Croney and Alena Stokes who each had two. Bushong, Loge, and Swofford each added one kill.
The Lady Bears travel to Salem on Thursday for their second conference game of the season.
