Ava Cross Country at West Plains

The Ava Bears made a good showing at the West Plains cross country meet on Tuesday, Sept. 17.
Despite the course being lengthened from last year, the Bears came in with several personal records (PR’s) among the younger runners.
In the junior high races Aubree Schuster finished 11th out of 87 runners in the girls junior high division. Aubree finished in 10:44 in the 1½ mile course, an improvement over the Sept. 12 Willow Springs meet by 39 seconds.
The top 20 ribboned in the girls’ race.  Darci Ray also ribboned by finishing in 19th with a time of 11:11, which improved her time by 42 seconds.
In the boys’ junior high division, all three of the young Bears ran  PR’s by impressive amounts.
Braden Swofford finished in 9:57, an improvement by 1 minute 12 seconds.  Jacob Key finished in 10:05, bettering his last week’s time by 1 minute 18 seconds.  And Gavin Goss finished in 13:40, also better by 45 seconds.  Braden and Jacob both ribboned by placing 17th and 18th, respectively, out of 88 runners in their race.
In the boys’ junior varsity race, sophomore Jonah Brown ran a 10:32 which was 39 seconds faster than at Willow last week.
In the junior varsity girls’ race, three Ava Bears competed.  Madison Schuster led the JV girls with a 12:40, an improvement for her by 54 seconds. Julianna Baker ran a 13:07 her first attempt at the 1½ mile distance. And Mallory Allen improved her time by 1 minute 19 seconds by finishing in 13:11.
The boys’ varsity brought in a 3rd place finish as a team behind the ever-powerful West Plains who had seven runners in  the top seven spots and a perfect cross country team score of 15 points.
Mountain Grove finished 2nd with 92 points over Ava with 100 points, a difference of only eight points.
Just a reminder that at Willow Springs, Mountain Grove beat the Ava Bears by 84 points.  So big improvements as a team by the Bears.
Caleb Stillings led the Bears placing 9th out of 65 and ran a time of 18:03.  Jordan Dimirsky placed 10th with a time of 18:31.  Jacob Luebbering picked off three Mountain Grove Boys that had beaten him at Willow last week and placed 16th with a time of 19:23.  Hayden Schuster ran the course in 20:54.  Sage Clunn followed with a time of 21:47.  And John Vineyard ran a 22:31.  Twenty medals were awarded in the varsity races.
Three of the Lady Bears medaled also, with Kayla Cooper once again leading her teammates finishing in the 15th spot with a time of 24:51.  Close behind was Bailey Ray who placed 17th in 25:21 and Megan Cooper was 19th  and had a new PR of 26:12.  JimiLynn Raybould came in 22nd with a time of 28:00.
