Garrett Bovard, 18, of Ava, received The General Billy Mitchell Award last week at the Springfield Armory with his proud family and squadron looking on.
He has been participating in the Civil Air Patrol for three years.
The Mitchell Award is one of Civil Air Patrol’s most prestigious cadet honors and marks the coming of age for CAP cadets as they graduate from the cadet enlisted ranks and prepare for even greater leadership as cadet officers.
Recipients of this award must pass various Aerospace, leadership, drill and physical training tests. Only 15 percent of cadets nationwide receive this milestone award, and all U.S. Military service academies look favorably upon cadets who have earned it.
The award honors Billy Mitchell, who is remembered for his prophetic vision of an independent air force, for his prediction of an enemy bombing of Pearl Harbor, and for his successful command of bombing runs on a captured German ship that demonstrated U.S. naval vulnerability to air attack.
In December 1941, one week before the attack on Pearl Harbor, Civil Air Patrol was founded by more than 150,000 citizens who were concerned about the defense of America’s coastline. Under the jurisdiction of the Army Air Forces, CAP pilots flew more than 500,000 hours, were credited with sinking two enemy submarines and rescued hundreds of crash survivors during WWII.
Garrett is a 2013 Ava High School graduate and will be attending Texas A&M Maritime Academy Corps of Cadets. C/2Lt Bovard will pursue a major in Marine Engineering and career in Naval Aviation.
