Watch D.O.G.S. Program Is Topic of Chamber of Commerce Meeting Tuesday

DiPremer.440Ava R-1 School hosted the February luncheon meeting of the Ava Area Chamber of Commerce Tuesday.
The meeting was held in the Decker Library on the high school campus, and the meal of broasted chicken, mashed potatoes and gravy, green beans, salad and desserts was prepared by the school’s consumer science classes.
Dr. Brian Wilson, superintendent, spoke briefly, making two important announcements.
First, he announced that due to renovation and construction work planned at the football field complex, high school graduation will be held in the gymnasium this spring.
He also announced to the Chamber group that Elementary Principal Diana Premer will retire at the end of the current school year.
With that announcement, Dr. Wilson introduced Mrs. Premer who talked about the new Watch D.O.G.S. (Dads of Great Students) program at the elementary school.
In conjunction with that discussion a video from the NBC “Today” show was shown.
Mrs. Premer said 300 people attended the initial kickoff program recently when the Watch D.O.G.S. program was introduced, and already 44 people have signed up to participate in the program.
The goal is to bring men – fathers, grandfathers and citizens of the community – into the school to interact with the students as a male role model.
The program has already begun with very positive results, she said.
Anyone wishing to participate  may fill out an application in the elementary school office.
Mrs. Premer said background checks will be made on all those who apply.
She also pointed out that one does not have to commit to a full day to participate in the program. If you can only spend half a day or a few hours in the school, that can be arranged when you fill out the application.
