Ava shot only eight free throws on the night and hit half of them, but made some big ones late in the game that put the game in the bag for the Bears.
Ava jumped out to an early 11-0 lead and led the Bobcats 11-3 after one quarter. Thayer outscored the Bears in the second and third quarters to trail 20-16 at the half and by only one point, 32-31, after three quarters. The Bears had a strong fourth quarter, however, outscoring the Bobcats 16-13 in the final period of play.
Thayer’s Levi Hargrove led all scorers with 24 points.
In the district game at Hollister Tuesday night the Bears had trouble putting points on the board, as indicated by the final score.
Gastineau led the Bears with 14 points and was the only Bear in double figures.
Loge had 8, Fish 6, Emerich 4 and Guengerich 2, to complete Ava’s scoring.
Christian Mitchell had 20 points for the Blue Eye Bulldogs, including three baskets from 3-point range.
Ava connected on 5-of-9 at the line and Blue Eye converted 3-of-5.
Ava trailed the Bulldogs 20-13 at halftime, and Blue Eye outscored Ava in each of the final three quarters.

Although season statistics have not yet been compiled, Coach Nathan Houk said he is certain Gastineau will move into the top five in career scoring at Ava High School.
