James E. Curry picJames Elmer Curry, 92 years, passed to Heaven on Jan. 1, 2013 at Heart of the Ozarks Healthcare, Ava, Mo.
Jim was born Aug. 15, 1920 in Douglas County, Mo. to J.E. (Elmer) and Esther (Curnutt) Curry. He graduated from Ava High School.
Jim was a lifelong resident of the Ava community.
On Aug. 14, 1949, Jim and Louanna Mae Grabeel were united in marriage in Independence, Mo. and to this union three daughters were born.
Jim was a retired attorney.  He also held ownership of Herald Publishing Co., and served as Publisher of the Douglas County Herald.   Jim was a WWII Veteran and served with the U.S. Navy. He received his undergraduate degree and Bachelor of Law degree from the University of Missouri, Columbia.  He also received his Juris Doctor from the University of Missouri.
Jim was a Christian and attended church with Louanna at the Ava General Baptist Church.
Jim was an active member of the community, and throughout his career he was involved in many organizations…City Attorney, 44 years; 1952 March of Dimes, campaign director; Ava Kiwanis Club, first president;   Chamber of Commerce, president;   Prosecuting Attorney,  6  years;  Missouri Republican State Convention, delegate;   Douglas County Fair Board, chairman; Kiwanis International, lieutenant governor; 31st Judicial District Bar Committee, chair; Rural Development Committee, chair;  University of Missouri Agricultural Extension Service state advisory council, public policy and rural development;  7th District GOP, office of treasurer;  Douglas County Post 112, American Legion, commander;  Ava R-1 Board of Education, president;  Federal Court Commission, chair;  elected 7th district of Missouri, Republican State Committeeman and served as founding member and president of the Ava Industrial Development Committee, and was later recognized by former Missouri Governor James Blair for his contribution to Industrial Community Development.
He also served on the Federal Home Loan Bank Board for several years, and received the the John Dickison Community Service Award from the Ava Area Chamber of Commerce in 2005.
Jim was lovingly devoted to his wife, Louanna and all his children and grandchildren.
Jim was preceded in death by his parents, Elmer and Esther and one brother, Howard Curry.
Jim is survived by his wife, Louanna Curry of the home, three daughters, Carol Curry, Sue Curry Jones and husband, Keith; and Penny Loftin and husband, Burrely, all of Ava, Mo.; three grandchildren, Jeremy Loftin and wife, Leah, Marshfield, Mo.; Michael Shiverdecker, Charleston, S.C.; and Bridget Loftin, Ava, Mo.; two great-grandchildren, Connor and Blaire Loftin, Marshfield, Mo.; and other relatives and friends.
Funeral services for Jim will be Saturday, Jan. 5, 2013, at 2 p.m. in the Clinkingbeard Funeral Home, Ava, Mo., with burial in the Ava Cemetery with full military honors by Douglas County American Legion #112.
Visitation will be Friday from 5 to 6:30 p.m. in the funeral home. Officiating will be Pastor Oren Alcorn. Memorials may be made to Douglas County Public Library or Gideon’s International.
