George Monroe Welker, 84

Angels in heaven proclaim their joy as they welcome home another child of God. George Monroe Welker joined his heavenly Father on Monday, Oct. 8, 2012 after a brief illness. He was surrounded by the love and comfort of his family at home.
George was born on Dec. 9, 1927 to William B. and Ola (Bridges) Welker and was raised near Cape Girardeau, Mo. He was born into the kingdom of God in 1961 and was a member of Gentry Church.
George met Gereva Pauline Palmer in 1939 at a young age in Cape Girardeau. They united in marriage on July 7, 1947 in California. To this love-filled union was born eight children, four sons and four daughters. Prior to beginning his family, George faithfully served his country as a sergeant in the United States Air Force from 1946 to 1949.
After George’s service he and Pauline began their family: Gary, Sharon, Rodney, Gina, Sue, Wanda, John and Joie. George followed road construction and the family moved several times.
In the spring of 1962, the family moved to the community of Roy in Douglas County, Mo. They lived there for seven years until they moved to Seymour, Mo. where George and Pauline currently resided. George retired from road construction in 1989. He kept cattle and enjoyed gardening and visiting his extensive family and friends.
Survivors include his wife Pauline; his children Gary Welker and wife Annette, Sharon Lee and husband Ronnie, Rodney Welker and wife Jo Ann; Gina Martin and husband David, Sue Thomas and husband Ronnie, Wanda Casady and husband Dean, and Joie Welker and wife Stacey; 22 grandchildren; 43 great-grandchildren; a sister Nina Jones; a brother Virgil Welker and wife Ruth; several nieces, and nephews; as well as a host of church family, neighbors and friends.
Welcoming George into heaven are his son John Welker; two grandchildren; his parents;           two brothers and two sisters.
George Monroe Welker, a beloved husband, loving father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, uncle, and a caring neighbor and friend leaves behind a legacy of faith and love. We celebrate his life and accomplishments, holding dear to the many cherished memories he created for all who knew and loved him.  Although we will miss Papa George dearly, we hold on to the truth that we will meet again.
Funeral services were at 2 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 11, at the Gentry Church on K Highway in Douglas County with the Rev. Bob Huskey and Pastor Riley Hall officiating. Visitation was from 1 p.m. till time of service at the church. Burial was in Day Chapel Cemetery with full military honors provided by the Webster County Veterans Memorial Association under the direction of Holman Howe Funeral Home of Seymour.
