Sunday, October 7 was the eighteenth Sunday after Trinity. Thursday, October 4 was the Feast Day of our patron saint, St. Francis of Assisi and the annual Blessing of the Animals was held on Saturday, October 6.
Bishop Hartley based his sermon on the gospel for the day, St. Matthew 22:34, in which Jesus, in response to a lawyer’s question, offers a summary of the Christian faith in the commandment to love God (the first and great commandment) and to love they neighbor as thyself. This second commandment was not expected by the Pharisees and expands Christianity beyond the Mosaic law. He then goes on to explain the nature of Christ who has his authority from God
Saturday evening, October 6, I met Chandler and Lincoln Connell in Springfield where we first had dinner at Gilardi’s, my favorite restaurant where we enjoyed excellent Italian food, then attended a wonderful performance of the Broadway musical “Les Miserables” and were very impressed by the high quality of the production. I don’t think people in our area realize just how good the musical and theatrical performances in Springfield really are.
