The Douglas and Ozark Counties Retired Teachers and Other School Personnel (RTA) met for lunch September 18 at Ava Senior Center. While they ate they enjoyed hearing the “Heritage Singers” who presented a program of gospel music.
The Heritage Singers that sang that day included three retired teachers, Jena Moyer, Keith Pellham, and Sybil Gheer along with Edgar Stewart and Heath Roberts. Heath Roberts accompanied the group with guitar.
RTA members, Lena Pierce, Norma Stillings, Twila Collins, Kay Transano, Geraldine Gray, Sherry Bradshaw, Ruth Evans, Collen Lakey, Ida Mae Huse, Sue Robirds, Virginia Painter, Norma Griffith, Thelma Chisam, Sybil Gheer, Terri Hall, Marie Bristol, Eva Painter, and guest, Thelma Philpott, met after lunch for a business meeting.
RTA president, Marie Bristol, called the group to order. Norma Stillings gave an invocation. Minutes and treasurer’s report were approved as presented. Marie reminded the group to save the “Box Tops for Education” for our schools. Soda Tabs are being saved for Ronald McDonald House.
Membership renewals are due in October for both the local RTA Unit and the state MRTA. Certain benefits are available to members of the state organization also. Those include several insurance and assistance plans, and special rates for car rentals, tours, cruises, etc. One of the most important benefits to membership in MRTA is the opportunity to stay informed and be involved in the Legislative process. MRTA has helped fend off several attacks on the Retirement System. It pays to be vigilant.
Three scholarships of $200 each were awarded to Lauren Weyrauch, Emily Petty, and Kayla Welch, college students who are majoring in Education.
Reports were given on the 2012 MRTA Delegate Assembly and a announcement of the up-coming Region 10 meeting that will be held in Ozark, Missouri, October 19. “Branson Days” will be held Saturday, October 20, with an optional show, Friday evening.
The next Douglas and Ozark Counties RTA meeting will be held Tuesday, October 9 at the Gainesville Senior Center with lunch at 11:30. There will be a program following lunch presented by Linda Waterhouse on the 1928 Dance Hall Fire in West Plains.
