Here are some health tips for senior men:  get the screenings you need for routine blood pressure and cholesterol checks; colonoscopies for cancer; ultrasounds for abdominal aortic aneurysms and blood tests for diabetes.  Get your weight under control.  Think preventive by taking a baby aspirin every day and shots for the flu.  Stay active and eat right and it’s never too late to quit smoking.

Ladies, can’t seem to get over feeling tired?  Start the day with a fiber-rich breakfast.  Space out the caffeine fixes.  Eat often, but not a lot.  Every three hours will help keep your blood sugar up.  Believe it or not have a lot of green growing plants in your home.  Drinking tea has shown an improvement in alertness, reaction time and memory.  And last, but certainly not least, don’t forget that a peanut butter (magnesium for energy) and banana (potassium to convert sugars into energy) sandwich will help you be more productive.

The menu for this week includes:  Monday, September 3—CLOSED.  Tuesday, September 4—Club croissant, broccoli soup, crackers, savory potatoes, cake.  Wednesday, September 5—Bone-in chicken, potatoes, gravy, corn, bread, fruit.  Thursday, September 6—Burrito, corn, salad bar, cobbler.  Friday, September 7—Spaghetti and meatballs, salad, green beans, bread, pudding.  Saturday, September 8—MILES FOR MEALS fundraiser breakfast:  Gravy, biscuit, sausage, fruit cocktail.

The scheduled activities for the week include:  Monday—CLOSED.  Thursday—Hospice Compassus calcium for the bones class at 11:00, Douglas County Health blood pressure clinic at 9:30.  Friday—Tai Chi exercise class at 10:30.

Want to put out a fall garden?  Make sure the area you have picked out gets a lot of sun because the daylight hours are getting shorter.  Make sure the soil is good.  You can have it tested by taking a sample to the local extension office.  Make sure its well drained, but also a convenient way to water.  Choose cool season vegetables that do well in southwest Missouri.  And if you do good, be sure to bring some by the Senior Center.  Our folks will eat anything!
