Commencement Saturday Night For Ava High School Senior Class

Commencement exercises for the Ava High School class of 2012 will be held Saturday evening, May 19, beginning at 7 p.m. Weather permitting, the graduation program will be held at the football stadium.

Classes were dismissed for summer vacation at 12:30 Wednesday. Other senior activities, including the Honor Awards Program and the traditional Senior Assembly were held last Friday.

The baccalaureate service for the 2012 senior class was held Sunday evening in the Performing Arts Center.

It is extremely unusual for commencement to be held after the school year has ended, but the unusually mild winter and the lack of snow days resulted in this rare turn of events.

The commencement program on Saturday will include speeches by co-valedictorians Carmen Potts and Lacey Tucker, as well as the salutatory address by Ashlyn Mitchell.

Diplomas will be presented by the Board of Education to some 96 graduating seniors.

This year’s senior class has selected as its class flower the red rose. The class song is “Tattoos on this Town” by Jason Aldean.

The class has chosen as its motto: “Go confidently in the direction of your dreams. Live the life you have imagined” by Henry David Thoreau.

At the Honor Awards Program last Friday morning, seniors received scholarships and awards totaling over $103,000, not counting A+ funds that will benefit a number of students.

More awards were announced at the Senior Assembly in the afternoon, talented members of the class performed for the student body, and the traditional Senior Video was viewed.

On Sunday, the Rev. Tom Maples, pastor of 1st Southern Baptist Church and father of senior Seth Maples, delivered the baccalaureate sermon to seniors, parents, and members of the public who gathered at the PAC.

Seniors Lucas Tabor, Morgan Emerich, Reagan Taylor and Zach Leonard also participated in the program which was presented by the Ava Area Ministerial Alliance.

A senior choir, under the direction of Michelle Wolfskill, high school vocal music teacher, also provided special music for the service.

The special Senior Edition of the Douglas County Herald will be published next week, featuring pictures of the seniors, recognition of citations given at the Honor Awards Program, and pictures from the Senior Assembly and baccalaureate.

Anyone wishing to purchase a special senior greeting ad for this edition should contact the Herald no later than Monday next week.
