Ava High School Students Preserve the Present With Yearbook

As the 2011-2012 school year progresses, 13 Ava High School students are making progress in their own way – through the creation of the annual Ava High School yearbook, known to many as the Docomo.

Students in Mrs. Chelsey Gilmore’s desktop publishing class are given the task each year to create a memorable, lasting book.  “It is important that the yearbook reflect our students and the world we live in today.  We want them to be able to look back and be reminded of their time spent at Ava High School,” comments their adviser, Mrs. Gilmore.

Students are responsible for designing, gathering information, and taking pictures for each page of the book.  “It is a lot of hard work, but it is worth it in the end,” explains junior Sydney Dry.  Along with the creation of the book, students must also raise the funds necessary to produce the book.

The students are taught marketing strategies and how to present themselves in public. The staff members then visit local businesses to sell advertisement space in the book. Each year, sales of the yearbook have continued to rise along with the quality of the book.

“At the beginning of the year we look back at previous books and brainstorm how to make the current book even better.  It is important that my students realize how important it is to make the book the best it can possibly be, year after year,” explains Gilmore.

The students also raise funds by selling Senior Recognition Ads. These ads allow friends and family an opportunity to leave a lasting message in the yearbook for their special senior.

Sales for the 2011-2012 Ava High School yearbook and Senior Recognition ads are currently under way. The Ava High School yearbook staff also has books from the following years on sale: 1998-1999, 2000-2001, 2001-2002, 2002-2003, 2003-2004, 2004-2005, 2005-2006, and 2006-2007.  If you are interested in purchasing a book or a Senior Recognition Ad, please contact Chelsey Gilmore at 417-683-5747 or ceslinger@ava bears.net.
